Bequest fundraising is reportedly the most cost effective form of fundraising there is and provides the best return on investment (about 90cents in the dollar).

Bequests are gifts that individuals leave in their wills.  There are two categories:

  • general bequests, such as a book collection or your home and its contents
  • specific bequests, these include cash, shares, bonds and antiques.
As an income stream for charities, churches and other non-profit groups, bequest fundraising has incredible potential.  This form of planned giving ought to be integrated into the fundraising master plan of all non-profits.

One of Australia’s largest charities receives an average, in excess of $11million annually from bequests.  This is from a total of $30million (approx.) achieved from all of its fundraising sources.

A 1998 report stated that 49% of Australians die without ever having made a will, with 7% of these having no dependents. For charities, churches and other non-profits, this means missed opportunities
