is committed to sustainable development and aims to be a valued member of the communities in which we work.

We will continue to seek opportunities to share our success by:

  • Working with communities to contribute to social infrastructure needs through development.
  • Developing partnerships that focus on creating sustainable partnerships for everyone.

Our target is to contribute, in aggregate, one per cent of our pre-tax profit on a rolling three-year average to sustainable community development programs. Our community managers liaise with a range of communities and assistance groups to maintain our relationship with the community and to deliver assistance.

BHP Billiton Wins Australian Prime Minister's Award
National Business Community Partnerships - Large Business Category 2002.

This award recognised our partnership with Conservation Volunteers Australia (CVA). Together BHP Billiton and CVA created Revive our Wetlands to revitalise at least 100 of Australia's most significant wetland sites over 3 years. This is the largest wetlands environment partnership ever in Australia. To date 93 wetlands have been selected and are being revived - more than 66% of these wetlands are of international significance. BHP Billiton employees and their families have actively worked on many Revive sites.

Revive champions have already:

  • Planted 56,000 stems
  • Propagated 25,00 plants
  • Collected 80 kilograms of seed
  • Removed 450 hectares weeds
  • Erected 24 kilometres fencing
  • Conducted 50 flora and fauna surveys
  • Built and maintained 28 kilometres of walking tracks

More than 14,000 volunteer days are being contributed as well as A$1.5 million in funding and inkind support from BHP Billiton. The partnership has enabled Conservation Volunteers to secure additional project support from local and state governments and other land management agencies. It is building a renewed interest and enthusiasm in wetlands.

The ultimate aim is to build community capacity to sustain the quality of the local environment
beyond the partnership duration.
